SF: $1 beer at the Homestead tonight…again

From the desk of Broke-Ass Stuart – Editor in Cheap

There’s a lot of reasons to like the Homestead. To begin with it looks like a genuine Victorian saloon replete with velvety wallpaper and an embossed tin ceiling.  While it has had many different names and incarnations, it has been a bar continuously since 1907…I think.  In addition to being a cool looking bar, the bartenders here are a perfect combo of sweet and surly, and the clientele is tattooed, pierced and attractive.  Sounds good right?  It gets even better: they sell peanuts and allow you to throw the shells on the floor!  I fucking love that shit!  I never litter in real life, so when I get to throw shit on the floor, it’s kind of invigorating (wow, cheap thrills huh?).

Look, I know I’ve posted this before, but the truth of the matter is that I just get really excited about Monday nights.  PBR is $1 and the DJ plays nothing but rockabilly and old soul records.  If you’re like me (and for your sake I really hope you’re not) this description is probably making you say to yourself, “Can a night get any better than $1 beer, faux-Victorian wall paper, attractive people, old soul music, and  throwing peanut shells on the ground?”  And my answer is yes.  Yes it can.  Every time you go to the Homestead, you have the chance of seeing the biggest dog you’ve ever seen in your life.  Seriously.  His name is Sweetpea and he’s a fucking monster.  Plus if you go there on Mondays (like tonight) you’ll probably see me too.

But you know what the best part of Monday nights at the Homestead is?  The fact that you can feel like a big shot and buy all your friends a beer.  How often does that happen?

    Hi There
Just read this and it made me laugh. It’s been a bar since 1902 though. I work there. Behind the bar we have a bar history if you like. It’s also rumored that there was a brothel upstairs when the building was owned by Fanny Pearl…

  2. Really? A bar history? I’m all about that shit! I will totally check that out next time I’m in there.
