Fishtail Prix Fixe

This past week had pretty much fucked me over hardcore.  My apartment got broken into last Monday, and my computer got stolen, along with my roommate’s Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii.  This is the third time I’ve gotten broken into (plus mugged once, and wallet stolen twice!) since living in NYC.  For a girl who never cooks, and pretty much lives on the fact that NY has so much to offer in the way of restaurants, it can be a really tough balancing act to save money and properly indulge yourself in all the amazing food experiences New York has to offer.

Last night, my roommate Alex and I made the trek to the Upper East Side Restaurant Fishtail for their $20 Prix Fixe dinner.  For some reason, I can’t seem to find the menu online, but here is the regular menu.

I ordered the Corn and Scallop Chowder, the Moule Frites, and the Dark Chocolate Mouse.  Alex had the Sea Urchin Risotto with Laughing Bird Shrimp, the Calamari Mac & Cheese, and the Dark Chocolate Mousse as well.  The chowder was the perfect portion and pretty tasty.  I’m always partial to mussels—and I expected them to be better somehow, but I guess they were just “OK.”   The garlic seasoning was a good call, though.

I really liked Alex’s Risotto, though he said the Calamari Mac & Cheese made him queasy.  He said he would’ve liked the dish better had the calamari been integrated with pasta, rather than just being calamari.   In other words, if there was actually some actual “mac” in it.  I dunno, I liked it okay as it was.  The highlight of the whole dinner was the insanely rich Dark Chocolate Mousse that was more reminiscent of the amazing and famous chocolate pot I had at Balthazar’s once.

Based on this dinner, overall, I think this place is pretty overrated for how much it normally costs, otherwise, they just didn’t put anything that great on this menu.  But for a $20 Pre Fixe, it’ll do just fine, thanks.
