Hey boys and girls, I’d like to talk about a serious societal trend that’s been plaguing the populace for quite some time now and doesn’t show any signs of receding, I’d like to talk about Food Porn.

You know the kind, the oh-so-close camera angles, the beads of condensation, and those shameless cream fillings! If there’s one thing a broke person like myself likes to indulge in, it’s a little bit of fantasy dining. I’ve never really been one to watch the food network, but give me a food blog and a high speed internet connection and I’m in heaven. One of my favorite sources for daily eye candy and culinary inspiration is Tastespotting. These purveyors of earthly delights post thousands of photos a day from all the food blogs out there all in one place for easy access. Most are recipes by amateur chefs, and some are drool worthy photos of particularly memorable meals at restaurants. The best thing about Tastespotting is the ability to search by any food term or even location.

Say you’re hankering for some macaroni and cheese, BAM! there’s 87 results, tacos, there’s 149 different things you want to put in your mouth. See where I’m going with this? I’ve gotten all of my favorite recipes from this site. It also proves extremely helpful if you’re searching for local food that doesn’t actually require you to prepare it. Search “New York” and you’ll get a bevvy of burgers, bagels, cocktails, and the information on where to track everything down. Search different neighborhoods to see what other foodies are eating in your hood. Think of this as a less sordid desk distraction that won’t get H.R on your ass when a coworker sneaks a peak over your shoulder. And and while we’re at it, check out Scanwiches. You’re welcome.

Laura S - Spendthrift Scribe

Laura S, left the "sixth borough" three years ago to settle in Brooklyn. After working at some daily rags, she now does writing on the side but still eats more Ramen then necessary. When she's not moving residences every 6 months, eating her way through every neighborhood, and trying every microbrew known to man, she is unsuccessfully rediscovering home economics. With her binging days behind her, she's now exploring new projects and rediscovering the city that she loves (although is still prone to sliding on her knees during a Prince karaoke set).
