Warm Up (like you need help doing that) at P.S.1 Today

So it’s almost the end of August.  Remember all those plans you had way back in May and haven’t gotten around to yet?  Well it’s time to get started folks.

Head over to P.S.1 – like right now – because today (Sat. Aug. 22) the MoMA extension in Long Island City is holding its weekly summer concert series Warm Up.  For just $10 (cash only) from 2-9pm Saturdays thru Sept. 5 you get admission to the museum and the outdoor concert on the museum steps.  Enjoy chilled drinks, wild uninhibited dancing, and hipsters galore!  Plus, if you are a Long Island City resident (proved with ID or mail), Warm Up is free for you and a guest.  Any LIC local wanna drag me along?

Today’s line up is Brennan Green, John Selway, Tim Love Lee, Talibam!, and the Phenomenal Handclap Band.  (I know… The Phenomenal Handclap Band!  Nice name.)

According to PS1’s website, DJ Brennan Green “distills a vibrant, quirky energy from the pleasantly warped clash between disco, punk-funk, and dance” and DJ John Selway is “one of electronic music’s most prolific and stylistically varied artists.”  Tim Love Lee is also a DJ with an “earthy sound that is equal parts disco throwback, 70’s porn groove, and acid-funk.”  I don’t know about you, but I certainly woke up this morning and thought, ‘you know, I think I’m in the mood for some good ol 70’s porn groove’…

If you are more in the mood for live music, the second half of the show is for you.  Talibam! is an irreverent Brooklyn-based indie rock duo of Matt Mottel (synthesizer) and Kevin Shea (drums) whose ebullient improvisations will get you all a-shakin inside – in a good way.  The Phenomenal Handclap Band will close out the day with a spectacle of a show “more akin to a spiritual church revival than an actual rock show.”  Hopefully along with indie rock and underground soul sounds, they will actually do some hand clapping.  (I seriously love hand clapping.)

Just in case you cannot make today’s event, info about the final two shows can be found here and advanced tickets can be bought at any agnès b. store in NYC.

Don’t forget that you also get to enjoy P.S.1’s exhibitions!  Right now, they’re showing a variety of interesting artists and installations – including Berlin-based conceptual artist Florian Slotawa who “assembles and arranges furniture and everyday objects in elaborate compositions that respond to the rooms and spaces in which they are presented” and Leandro Erlich: Swimming Pool, an extraordinary and visually mind-blowing installation by the Argentine artist Leandro Erlich.
