In keeping with my “How to Make a Garden for Free in Berkeley” series (Part I, Part II), here is a perfect opportunity to get a bunch of starts for your winter crop (though this looks to be more of a flower than veggie kind of party). A FREE plant exchange in Oakland this Saturday! I honestly don’t know much about the Lakeshore neighborhood. When I asked around I heard it’s where people who can afford nicer places but still want to seem “down” live. If this is true, they will probably have nicer plants than you, which is a bonus. Maybe you can exchange your dying cactus for some orchids. Or trade your brown ivy plant for some bouquets made of money. Who knows? Over 1500 plants were exchanged at the March event, so anything is possible.

What to bring: cuttings, clippings, full-size plants, flowers, succulents, tropicals, ground cover, vines, bushes, bulbs, wild grasses (be smart and try not to bring something that will get you arrested—it’s not that kind of plant exchange, people). If you don’t have time/resources to repot your donations, bags or newspaper will suffice (bring newspaper, bags, boxes, cardboard to carry your plants home in). Also kosher for the exchange: gardening accessories (stepping stones, pots, wood, trellises, landscaping accents, tools, pruning sheers, watering cans, etc.). You can even bring goldfish and koi if your pond’s residents are too prolific (although I personally find this strange). For more info, visit their website.
