I've been to many a shows in my day. On average, 3-4 a week. By far the best show I have ever been to with NIN and Grizzly Bear's 2009 Bonnaroo performances in close second, was the Ratatat show at the Fillmore not too long ago this year. With the Fillmore's bouncy floor on our side, these two absolutely blew everyone in the crowd's faces off with their astounding live recreation of their seemingly very produced album. They shocked fans and musicians by using unconventional instruments at surprising parts of familiar songs. Their weighty beats pulsing through our entire bodies, it was almost a religious experience to see such magic appear right before our eyes and ears. I'm sure more than half the crowd was on some shit, but with or without substances this show was life changing in every way possible. In the way that no words can finitely describe. The only way you'll ever know fully what I'm talking about is if you were there, and if you weren't you really missed out.

When I was 14*, my friend's older sister took us to Horde Fest. We left around 9 on a cool, crisp Kansas City in the summertime morning. And by that, I mean the temperature was 100 degrees with 90 percent humidity.

In the infinite wisdom I'd acquired from my time on Earth, I opted for a steady supply of canoe beer and brown, seed-filled schwag in lieu of breakfast and lunch.

It didn't take long for my dehydrated, underdeveloped body to succumb to extreme intoxication.

At that point I was shirtless, sweating profusely, and totally savage drunk. I felt a little dizzy and it seemed like the perfect time to go to the bathroom to cool off and evacuate my bowels.

Yada, yada, yada...my pants are around my ankles and I'm throwing up into an amphitheatre toilet. The cold concrete of the less than sanitary floor felt incredibly soothing to my skin at that point and I sprawled out pretty much completely naked and went to sleep.

When I came to, a nice gentleman was outside the stall door inquiring into my well being and telling me to put my clothes on and come to talk to him. It should probably go without saying that he was an officer of the law.

At this point, I sit with The Finest on the lawn outside the bathrooms and proceed to spin a yarn about how I was only dehydrated and had become ill from consuming too much water. Either because I was born to bullshit or (more likely) he took mercy on me because I looked like a 10-year-old with a chromosome disorder and couldn't fathom somebody that young being a drunken liar, he let me go and told me to be careful.

Then the clock struck 1 p.m.

It's definitely not the best concert I've been to. I don't even remember if Blues Traveler or Neil Young was headlining that year, but that was the first, and definitely not the last time, that music and the law (or rather, avoiding the law) intersected in my life. Please send this poor, slow-witted aspiring music attorney to the seminar.

*I ran about 5'4" 130 at that time.
