Harry Aleo was a throwback to when San Francisco wasn’t as freaky-deaky as it is now. As a super conservative in Noe Valley he stuck out like a sore thumb, and liked it that way. He’s dead now, but he used to own Twin Peaks Properties of which I wrote this in my SF book:
So as far as I can tell this is just a property management place or a real estate agent but they have my favorite window display in the City. It’s a bunch of hard-line, right-wing, moderately incendiary stuff like, “I miss Reagan” signs, mixed in with photos of racehorses and old photos of the City. Hands down though, my favorite sign is the one that reads, “Welcome to Looney Valley, home of cell phone, latte sipping liberals. This office is an island of properly conservative traditional values. A breath of fresh air for my conservative friends.” Although I don’t agree with the guy, I do admit he’s got balls. You should really go check out his window. It’s good for a laugh.
Yup, dude was a total rarity in this city. Anyways, besides being a Reganite, he also liked the ponies and ended up owning one of the fastest horses in America, Lost in the Fog. Though he passed away last year, someone made a documentary about this eccentric man and his speedy horse and it’s there’s a FREE outdoor showing at 4061 24th St. in Noe Valley, at 8pm. If I weren’t working that night I’d probably go check it out. The synopsis sounds pretty interesting.
