Would the game gotten as popular with its original name, "The Captian's Mistress?"
One Christmas in high school, my cousin, who was six at the time, asked me in her sweet little kid voice if I wanted to play Connect Four. I spaced out for a second while were were playing, and the next thing I knew there were black and red checkers in a stack on the floor, and she was laughing maniacally because she’d just beat me in about six moves. Apparently, singing the song from the old commercial in my head was not the best strategy, because my checkers never lined up in a row of four and grabbed each others’ cartoon hands. Instead, I kept getting my ass kicked and walked away in defeat. Several years later, I end up occasionally playing Connect Four in bars, and I usually lose. Even if my opponents are drunk, they usually care/try harder that the game than I do. If you’re a competitive Connect Four player in the slightest, go to the Bell House tomorrow night. It’s the first night of the World’s Biggest Connect Four Championship. There’s a $3 entry fee, and the prizes include bar tabs, cash prizes, gift certificates, etc. If you don’t wanna play, but love the sound of checkers hitting tables, it’s free to watch, and there are FREE vodka drinks from 7-8pm, and well drinks are $4 from 7pm on.
