SATURDAY 1pm-3pm FREE ICE CREAM!!!
This event is gonna be rad. I know how some of you feel about Café Gratitude, and as a vegan I will be the first to admit that it’s an unusual establishment, but it’s also FREE ice cream and an important book, so suck it up. On Saturday afternoon the Café Gratitude in Berkeley is hosting a vegan ice cream social and book signing for Ruby Roth, author and illustrator of That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals: A Book about Vegans, Vegetarians, and all Living Things. And in case you didn’t know, the book is kind of a big deal. It is the first children’s book to address the plight of animals on factory farms, the emotional lives of animals, and introduce vegetarianism and veganism to young readers. It has received endorsements from the likes of Jane Goodall, Alicia Silverstone, and John Robbins. Oh yeah, and the author happens to be my sister!

I'll tell you what I'm grateful for!!!
With locations in San Francisco, Berkeley, Marin, and a stand in the big Oakland Whole Foods (the restaurants are a little pricey, but they’ve got some sliding scale specials at the Oakland spot!), Café Gratitude is hard to miss. But if you’ve never been to the raw/vegan restaurant, you have missed out on an entertaining, if not somewhat annoying, experience. The key moment is when the waiter asks you, “What are you grateful for today?” and you have to bite your tongue so as not to say, “I’d be grateful if you got your patchouli-laced dreadlocks out of my drink and gave me some damn utensils,” but instead you force a smile and say something like “sunshine” because that’s what they want to hear.
So yes, they’re a little wacky and a little culty, but their desserts are beyond incredible, their smoothies are delectable, and their warm grain bowls and salads and soups are delicious (personally, I steer clear of the entrées—in my opinion, raw dishes just shouldn’t claim to be “pizza” or “enchiladas,” as it just leads to disappointment). Regardless of your feelings about CG, come eat some FREE vegan ice cream (it is truly some of the best and freshest ice cream you’ll ever have) and celebrate this awesome book!
