Have you ever found yourself being sued for copyright infringement and thought to yourself “Man, tradition copyright laws are whack.” Yeah, me neither, but I’ve definitely been slapped in the face with the harsh restrictions of outdated copyright laws that don’t take into account modern culture surrounding media and sharing.
Luckily, smartypants Lawrence Lessig founded Creative Commons, with the goal of revolutionizing the world of intellectual property laws. In case you aren’t familiar with CC and the work that they do, you should visit their website, because I am not going to explain it very well. Basically (and in their words) they are dedicated to making it easier for people to share and build upon the work of others, consistent with the rules of copyright.” They also “provide free licenses and other legal tools to mark creative work with the freedom the creator wants it to carry, so others can share, remix, use commercially, or any combination thereof.” Sweet right?
Well, to make it even sweeter, every other month CC hosts FREE salons at which users of CC licenses present the awesome ways they have utilized the system. Filmmakers, writers, musicians, tech nerds, and everyone in between salivate at the mention of Creative Commons, and the salons serve as an orgy of ideas and examples of why CC licenses rock. Plus there are free snacks and drinks, and lots of cool people to meet and mingle with.
The next salon is next Thursday, the 17th, and this is a special occasion, as CC is also celebrating their 7th birthday. What does this mean to you? In addition to all the usual awesomeness there will be CAKE!!! Woot! The presenters that night are the icing on that cake, with Alexander Macgillivray from Twitter speaking as well as Into Infinity, an installation of audio loops and circular canvases paired together in infinite combination. So check it out next Thursday, and remember, remixing is OK!
