Did you even know that there was a Quaker Meeting House in Manhattan? Well not only is there one, but the beloved and wonderful Wallace Shawn will be there tonight, reading from his volume of essays called, shockingly Essays. Most of us 80s babies know Wallace Shawn from such cinematic gems as Clueless and The Princess Bride. It might surprise some to know that he was an award winning playwright and the son of William Shawn, longtime editor of The New Yorker. Once I saw him at Blue Ribbon and he told me that my dress was “lovely”. It was quite a moment.
As far as Essays goes, Shawn’s books is apparently filled with humorous, explorative insight into what it means to be privileged liberal in America. The event is being held as a fundraiser for Revolution Books, and after the reading Shawn will “discusses human nature with a communist,” Andy Zee. Tickets start at $25 which may be prohibitively expensive for some, but it helps to know that the cash is going to a good cause.
