I think I may have found the cheapest sandwich shop in San Francisco. It’s so cheap that I am telling everyone to go eat there, and not because I’m a particularly generous or helpful person, mind you. I just want everyone to spend their money on this food because I seriously don’t understand how this business can stay afloat with the insane deals they pass out.
I’m talking about Cafe Dolci on Market at 3rd. It’s this little Vietnamese hole-in-the-wall that sells huge sandwiches for less than four dollars! What’s even better is that these sandwiches have some sort of magical ability that allows them to stick to your ribs for hours so that you’ll eat less (and thus spend less money) on your next meal.
They also sell these sizable cups of homemade tapioca for a dollar and some odd change. I get one of those and a sandwich and my meal ends up being around six bucks. That’s less than a Mission burrito – which are amazing, don’t get me wrong – but a girl can only eat so many beans, if you catch my drift.

Most of the Vietnamese places in the TL have sandwiches for around three dollars. It’s a good deal but not uncommon.
I believe it, even though I honestly haven’t really searched out good meal deals in the TL – mostly because the couple of dining experiences I’ve had there have not been good. But what thrills me the most about this place is that it’s in a more expensive part of town. I get really tired of looking at $12 FiDi sandwiches on my lunch breaks.
After reading your recommendation I went to Cafe Dolci. I got a chicken sandwich for my co-worker (who disliked it). I got a pork bun for my boss ($1.75) which was decent. And I got a grilled pork sandwich & a steamed pork sandwich—my boss and I shared half of each sandwich. The steamed pork sandwich was awful—the meat was some fake processed crap that was pale white and smelled weird. The grilled pork sandwich was ok but only had a few thin slices of actual meat in it. Overall, I’ve had better Vietnamese sandwiches…….but it was fun to try something new and since the sandwiches are $4.34 a pop it wasn’t a big deal. I think I may venture into the TL to find a better sandwich–cause Vietnamese sandwiches in general do rock. Good times.
