I went to a Rangers game the other night and was transported back to my childhood in Maine, where we would get up before sunrise for morning practices and occasionally make the drive to Portland to watch the Maine Mariners, now the Portland Pirates, our state’s National Hockey League farm teams. In those days my favorite player was Bruce Shoebottom (for serious) not for his name, but because he was the enforcer. That means he fought a lot. Once, after getting ejected he sat in the stands in his equipment. So when there were two fights in the 1st period Tuesday, it brought me back. As did dads punching air to AC/DC’s “Dirty Deeds†and the house anthem “Zombie Nation†. The only thing missing were mascots shooting tee-shirts out of an air cannon into the crowd, which is strange considering they missed no opportunity to promote youth loyalty with intermission scrimmages and zamboni rides for kids.
But even stranger than no mascots at a hockey game are mascots at a bar, which goes down tonight at Home Sweet Home where there will be a petting zoo courtesy the art-prank theatre group Club Animals from 9-11pm. As they put it:
“There will be hay, chicken wire, feed, and a bear, chicken, bunny, dog, and dolphin. I’d say we’re ahead of our time, but in what time would this make any fucking sense?? I think we are ahead of time itself.”
“I would like to give a special thanks to the female guitar player from the hardcore punk band Drunkdriver for participating in a Bouncy Ride after her set. I would also like to thank the lead singer for trying to bash my face in with the microphone. What an adrenaline rush he gave me!”
