Bender’s

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Since today’s feature is a haiku that Monica penned about the delicious yo-yo’s we always get at Bender’s, I figured I’d dig up my old zine and transcribe what I wrote about the bar before it got fire bombed.  Here it is:

Bender’s: 800 South Van Ness @ 19th St.

Relatively new to the Mission bar scene, Bender’s brings something totally unique to the table, FREE BBQ.  That’s right, every Sunday afternoon Bender’s is grilling up hamburgers (and probably veggie burgers) just for you.  But don’t go just for the FREE food, this is actually a fu bar to hang out in.  The layout makes it easy to either seclude yourself or be the little social butterfly that you are, and the drinks are cheap.  Also the space is big enough to have bands, which the occasionally do.

Luckily for all of us Johnny Davis and co. did exactly what they said they would do and completely rebuilt Bender’s right out of it’s smoldering ashes.  And guess what, they still do FREE BBQ on Sundays from 3-7pm.  And they still do live music (remember these FREE shows?).  And you know what else?  They are still one of the best dive bars in SF.  Fuck, I’m getting thirsty just thinking about it.
