Carroll Garden’s Bastille Day Celebration

Tuesday is Bastille Day–France’s sarcastically muttered, Veuve Clicquot and Petanque filled answer to the 4th of July. The celebration is today, though and it’s the biggest one in the US! Smith street gets covered in sand and transformed into petanque courts where old French men in berets munching on baguettes toss little metal balls at larger metal balls.

Booze purveyors line the streets, and local French Restaurants sponsor food specials in the open air.  and Ricard). Last year, people were dancing in the street, and the Blue Orchard orchestra played the jazzy tunes that made everyone feel totally Parisian.

For an added soupcon of American -ness, a totally rockin’ skateboard tournament will be held on the north end of Smith Street as well.

Head over now until late tonight for dancing, booze, food, scoping cute girls in shorts and less-cute guys in shorts while silently and smugly preferring the BBQ fireworks and beer-soaked festivities of Amurrrican Independence Day!
