Top 10 Blogs for When it’s Time to Escape

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

I’m sure that I’m not alone in being someone who regularly fires up the ol’ laptop in order to get some work done and then finds herself two hours later having an intense G-chat conversation about the likelihood of a 2012 apocalypse, while simultaneously reading Jezebel and looking at clothes online.

The Internet is a dangerous beast, people, and can suck the day out of your day faster than you can imagine and before you know it it’s 6 o’clock, the sun is setting and you have nothing to show for it but some inside information about where George Michael’s latest speed-fueled masturbatory arrest took place, and the exact circumference of Kim Kardashian’s ass. (See Patty K. Poole Syndrome)

However sometimes we need a little web-time before we delve into work; sort of like  warming up before running.  When using the Internet for a little break from reality, it helps the follow the rules you would with any hard drug; if you’re going to do it you might as well do the good stuff and use it in moderation, instead of doing the shitty stuff over and over again until you just wanna pass out.

In my mind there is no better way to get inspired and motivated than looking at something beautiful or reading something hilarious.  For every stupid gossip blog out there, there is one that might actually enrich your life (besides this one, of course)

Here are 10 Quality Sites well deserving of your company time.

1.DesignSponge

This site is Grace Bonney’s temple of all things design-y from sneak peeks into amazing homes, awesome Do-It-Yourself projects, roundups of affordable items from every conceivable category and an amazingly impressive “Before and After section.”  So good.

2. 101 Cookbooks

When you get back from lunch and are sorely regretting that double cheeseburger or slice of pepperoni pizza, check out Heidi Swanson’s site where the San Francisco based cook churns out recipe after recipe of amazing, healthful, vegetarian food accompanied by stunning photographs.  It will change the way you look at kale.

3. Sea of Shoes

Yes, there is something slightly infuriating and annoying about a 17-year old with access to this kind of wardrobe, but Jane Aldridge and her mother who collaborate on this blog have fantastic senses of style and enviable skill as photographers on top of  seemingly limitless credit cards.  It’s just fun.

4. The Sartorialist and Face Hunter

I lump these two together because I feel they are the counterparts to each other; virtually no text, just street style shots. The first is a bit more refined and with an eye towards elegance, while the second is all about the wild, edginess of young peepeulz. Both are perfect with your first cup of coffee/tea in the morning.

5. Go Fug Yourself

Schadenfreude at it’s most wonderful.

6. Fine Lines

This one is probably more for the ladeez (ha! like the others aren’t!) and is actually just a link site to the wonderful column that Lizzie Skurnick writes for Jezebel called Fine Lines, in which she re-reads beloved Young Adult classics from our youth, and analyzes them with a needle-sharp insight rarely applied to young people’s literature. Brilliant!

7. This is Glamorous.

Indeed.

8. Miss Pandora Pandora

Hot French chick dresses and is photographed wearing outfits inspired by the art history she studies.  Ya feel me?

9. Charles and Marie

This is more of a store than a blog but its got awesome stuff from a dude who travels the world looking for well-designed functional objects. Even the vibrators look like some Frank Gehry shit. Sweet.

10.  Jim Anchower’s Hard Rockin’ page on the Onion

HELL-lo!  You don’t need me to tell you why nobody rides the storm out like THIS hombre.

BAS Writers

BAS Writers

BAS Writers is mostly a collection of articles written by people for the early days of this site. Back then nobody knew that snarky articles they were writing could come back and haunt them when job searching a decade later.
