Every New Year’s, I make a goal to be less hungover on New Year’s Day than the year before. I’ve succeeded the past few years, and maybe I’ll stop getting hangovers completely by 2025. No matter the day of the year, my favorite brunch place, hungover or not, is Magda’s International Cafe. Most of the international dishes are Mexican influenced, like huevos rancheros, corn cakes topped with eggs, breakfast burritos smothered in green sauce, etc. They also serve regular American dineresque breakfast foods like pancakes, eggs, and French toast. (They menu describes the crispy French toast as “You have to try it. And it’s right). The best part: the most expensive entree on the menu is $8.50. (And there are pitchers of sangria for six bucks). Aside from the food, I love Madga’s because there’s never a line, there’s a giant fish tank in the corner, and there’s mismatched salt and pepper shakers on each table. And for all you vegans or non-egg eaters, you can substitute tofu in any of the egg dishes.
