FREE Surfer Blood Show at Amoeba Records on Tonight!

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Does surfer blood still taste like pennies?

Why don’t I ever learn my lesson?  If I want to see a show, I should buy tickets at the moment they go on sale.  Instead, I put it off, put it off, put it off, the show invariably sells out, and I pout and bitch about the unfairness of it all.

This is what happened with Surfer Blood, the band from West Palm Beach whose debut album, Astro Coast, scored an 8.2 rating and the coveted label of “best new music” from Pitchfork.com.  Maybe this is why Surfer Blood’s Friday, April 2nd show at Bottom of the Hill with Turbo Fruits, Ganglians and the Bagel Radio guy (mmm, bagels…) has been sold out for weeks (or at least since last weekend when I tried in vain to get my tix).

BUT GUESS WHAT?!  We live in San Francisco and Amoeba Music has come through for us again!  On Thursday, April 1st at 6pm, Surfer Blood will be playing for FREE at Amoeba, so the pouting and bitching can officially stop (and then resume again at the show when I get there too late to snag a spot up front, am relegated to the middle rows and then can’t see the band over the CD shelves because of my goddamn hobbit genetics).

If you haven’t heard Surfer Blood, check ’em out.  I’m definitely into it.  I hate comparing bands to other bands, and I hate when something is described as “indie pop,” so I’ll just tell you what else Pandora played on the Surfer Blood radio station while I was writing this up:  Titus Andronicus, Jay Reatard (RIP), Japanese Motors, The Morning Benders, The Breakups, and The Drums.  Good-looking (-sounding?) bunch, right?

Just go.  FREE shows at Amoeba are awesome and Thursday’s supposed to be the only sunny day for the rest of the week, so you’ll want to leave the house.  Plus you can go to the FREE Epicsauce show right after!

Christy Jovanelly - Cheapskate Commentator

When Christy announced she was leaving her family's Southern California home and moving to San Francisco, her mom said, "Have fun in that den of sin." This is the only (however sarcastic) advice Christy has ever taken from her mom, who also told her to join eharmony.com and cover her eyes during sex scenes in movies. Christy puts her creative writing degree to good use by locating the typos on Chinese food menus and spends most of her time challenging friends to all-you-can-eat contests and trying to get that one bartender at Zeitgeist to smile.
