Hot Chicks and Ass-Kicking: Why Haven’t You Been to the Roller Derby Yet?

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Guys punching each other in the head!

I know what you’re thinking: That movie with Ellen Page and Drew Barrymore looked really bad! But don’t take that out on our San Francisco Bay City Bombers (did you know they’re the defending world champions?) because just looking at their website gets me fired up for a good round of ass kicking. Look at this quote from a member of the Orlando Thunder (who, conveniently enough, are taking on the Bay City Bombers next Saturday, May 1st):

“I bash a competitor down on his back in front of thousands, Den I skin his ass good, even if a few rules are broken. Screw da rules. This is Roller Derby. I get paid to kick ass.”

I have no idea what that guy is talking about, but I will gladly contribute several dollars to this bloodsport if it means I get to watch people kick each other’s asses. And luckily enough, now that the Bombers are back in San Francisco proper at Kezar Pavilion, they’ve got cheapo VIP seats on sale through Goldstar for only ten bucks. Which seems like a totally reasonable price to pay to watch people try to murder each other on rollerskates. Plus, I heard they have corn dogs!

Bay City Bombers vs. Orlando Thunder
Roller Derby at Kezar Pavilion
$10 VIP seats on Goldstar
Next Match: May 1st, 8pm
Kezar Pavilion
755 Stanyan St at Beulah (Upper Haight)

Andrew Dalton - Aggressive Panhandler

Andrew is an East Coast transplant from Virginia hamming it up in San Francisco without any intention of leaving. Having worked every typical job from Bike Shop Employee to Bartender to Ad Agency Hotshot, to Dotcom Layoff he now busts his ass covering the "weird things to do" beat for gracious local audiences at SFAppeal.com and rallies the Western Addy/Lower Haight/Panhandle neighborhoods into action at AggressivePanhandler.com. His work was published in a real, paper magazine one time. One day he might even figure out how to make money from it.
