Loosen Up and Learn Salsa for FREE at Madrone Thursdays

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Aural and social lubrication provided

I talk about Madrone a lot, but how could I not? Every night has it’s own unique draw, so you never know what the crowd’s gonna look like (although for me the main draw is usually a bar stool and cheap whiskey). Perhaps one of the more unlikely nights at this neighborhood watering hole is Tropicana Thursdays where DJ Don Bustamante sets the turntables to “Latin” and FREE Salsa lessons kick off at 9pm. But if you’re like me, you’re probably pretty awkward so you’re gonna need some help loosening up, and that’s where Thursday’s $5 Pisco Sour special comes in.

If you’ve never had a Pisco Sour, it’s kind of like the Peruvian answer to a margarita, except Pisco (a clear Peruvian brandy) doesn’t leave you with quite the tequila hangover. With the rise of Peruvian restaurants and cevicherias in the city like La Mar and Pisco Latin Lounge, the pisco sour is enjoying some time in the spotlight right now. And speaking of La Mar, their bartender who moonlights under the name DJ Apocalypto will be taking turns pouring drinks as well as spinning tunes so you can get your Salsa shaking.

Andrew Dalton - Aggressive Panhandler

Andrew is an East Coast transplant from Virginia hamming it up in San Francisco without any intention of leaving. Having worked every typical job from Bike Shop Employee to Bartender to Ad Agency Hotshot, to Dotcom Layoff he now busts his ass covering the "weird things to do" beat for gracious local audiences at SFAppeal.com and rallies the Western Addy/Lower Haight/Panhandle neighborhoods into action at AggressivePanhandler.com. His work was published in a real, paper magazine one time. One day he might even figure out how to make money from it.
