Yelp Summer Camp

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

While the theme of this weekend is certainly music heavy, what with Siren Fest bringing out all the kids to Coney Island, and the Summer Hummer party with Fucked Up DJing at  the Soho Grand, you have your pick of where to sway and sweat. While I promise myself every year I’m gonna suck it up, deal with the crowds, and go to Siren, I pussy out every year and regret it. So the lesson is, don’t be me. But if the idea of rubbing elbows with a large chunk of the population seems overwhelming, I recommend you flee the island, for another island at Yelp’s Summer Camp at Governor’s Island.

Join the NewNew and Etsy Labs for some DIY lessons under the sun. Break out those girl scout skills and master the art of the sailor knot for some nautically inspired jewelry. If your hungover shakey-hands can’t handle more intricate hands-on skills, watch others do the dirty work while you lounge on your picnic blanket and drink some spiked punch. Either way, stop by and say hi at Nolan Park. And as always, the ferry is free.

Laura S - Spendthrift Scribe

Laura S, left the "sixth borough" three years ago to settle in Brooklyn. After working at some daily rags, she now does writing on the side but still eats more Ramen then necessary. When she's not moving residences every 6 months, eating her way through every neighborhood, and trying every microbrew known to man, she is unsuccessfully rediscovering home economics. With her binging days behind her, she's now exploring new projects and rediscovering the city that she loves (although is still prone to sliding on her knees during a Prince karaoke set).
