Happy Hours Until 10PM Are the Happiest of All

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Like most people working in NYC, happy hour remains a mythical wonder mostly enjoyed by summer interns and college students. The rest of us *might* slide into the last 5 minutes of a special, panting with drops of sweat blurring our vision or what the discounted beers are, but will probably still end up waiting at the bar too long, miss it, and start thinking about all of the anonymous liquids we ran through in flip-flops trying to get to the bar in time.

And then we put our wallets away and try to pull off one of those mysterious “I know something you don’t know” looks that never look like that at all , and head on over to Keybar in the East Village which offers a 2-for-1 special on any drink – top shelf, import, martinis, etc – from open until 10PM Tues-Sat and all night Sunday and Mondays (I know!!!). They also have a diverse drink selection, a wood-burning fireplace in the winter time, and I’ve even seen people bring their own food despite a lack in ample table space (read: balance and shout-out wipe required). One thing is that I’ve noticed the later you get there, the louder and less conducive to actually talking to the people you go there can be, but that might actually be what you’re going for after a long day.

If Keybar is too crowded with thirsty throngs, nearby The Boxcar Lounge also has a nice deal, serving up a 2-for-1 drink special from 6-10PM Monday-Thursday and 4-8PM Saturdays and Sundays. Their selection varies enough to please the beer/wine/booze snobs to the light beer lovers, which was the biggest plus in my book for this place. The second is the charming backyard patio, but that is often crowded and less easy to enjoy. It is also not alcoholic.

Next time you’re eavesdropping on your boss to find out how much longer you have to pretend to be working, now you can spend that energy maybe actually doing work! Or googling your name! But probably practicing the “I know something you don’t” face some more.
