DIY: Halloween Candy Bark in Doll Serving Dish

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

If you’ve been anywhere near Haight Street, you know it’s nearly Halloween. Costume shoppers were out in full force this past weekend, elbowing through the Wasteland, eyeballing possibilities at Held Over. The best party of the year is only days away and in between turning this vinyl devil costume into the best Scopria replica possible, I’m also prepping by buying sugar. Lots of sugar.

Because a week after Halloween, when the thought of candy is making me feel a little ill, I’m gonna melt it down like gold and turn it into candy bark. (By the way, check out the incredible Halloween goodies over at Forkable).

Make sure the candy you want to use is in bits '“ chop up Snickers and Milky Way bars, crumble cookies, etc. Save some dark and white chocolate candy for the base '“ Hershey’s is key here, both Special Dark and Cookies & Crème are ideal – and get yourself food coloring. Melt your white chocolate base in a bowl in the microwave until it’s smooth, then add the food coloring until you’ve achieved a vaguely gross Halloween color like green or purple (or a less gnarly shade). Spread the chocolate on waxed paper then add your candy bits. Melt down the dark chocolate and drizzle it over the top, then pop it in the fridge to set. Cut or break into chunks, then serve in the Doll Serving Dish (courtesy www.zieak.com).

Creepy as a mother, right? If you’re diggin’ the doll dish, then get a doll (with a hollow plastic body), a utility knife, hot glue gun, scissors and a plastic container '“ like a salsa container. This is going to sound wrong and disturbing but cut open the belly of the doll, then remove the head. Wash out the torso thoroughly, then you’ll use pieces cut from the plastic container and the hot glue gun to seal off any openings for the arms and legs. Replace the head and fill with goodies. I’d consider adding a plastic liner just to catch crumbs, but if you’re eating out of a doll, you’re probably not too worried about it. Happy Halloween y’all!
