FREE Unrinal Birthday Party at Old Town Bar

One hundred years ago today, Old Town Bar installed their first set of flushable urinals. Today, those urinals are the same ones males patrons use to take a piss. Tonight, the bar is having a celebration to commemorate their historical urinals. Not only are they really old, they’re the last working Hinsdale urinals on the east coast. Winfield E. Hinsdale patented his low-splashing porcelin fixture design in 1901, complete with tall sides for more privacy than modern urinals. Only Old Town Bar and an architecture school in Nebraska still own working Hinsdales. And ladies, don’t worry. Old Town Bar’s is inviting women to have a peak at their century old bathroom fixtures. So everyone can check out the etching on top that says “November 1, 1910.”

After years of denial, Kiley has finally admitted to baring a striking resemblance to Velma from Scooby Doo. Instead of traveling in a van hunting ghosts, she prefers wandering on foot in search of tacos, cheap beer, and fake birds. Growing up in Portland, Kiley enjoyed the balance of urban and green spaces. Then she spent her four years at Ithaca College, and found herself craving more sprawling asphalt in her life. So she moved to Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where most of the buildings look like they're about to collapse. Kiley's favorite activities include: getting lost, crafting, sewing, biking, and geeking out at museums. Her love of taxidermy probably makes her a terrible vegetarian, but she doesn't care.

it’s funny that you said, “yes, urinals,” because when I read the headline, i was like, “urinals???”

So um, while ALL of the public was invited into the men’s room for the celebration – where did the guys go who actually had to take a leak – the alley??

I’ve wondered the same about the Madonna Inn in California, who invites everyone from the wife, the kids and grandma into their men’s room to gaze upon the waterfall urinal – what the heck do the guys do in the meantime?

I notice there’s never a party (for the world’s oldest tampon dispenser) that men are invited to inside the ladies’ room. Double standard much?!

Hey! I think you may be mistaken about the Hinsdale. There are (what I think) are very very similar urinals in the men’s room of the New York County Court House. Mezz. fl. 60 Centre St. Take a look!

The place was built in the 20′s or 30′s so it’s possible.

Thanks for the tip about the courthouse, BD…I don’t think they’ll let me into the men’s room there, though. If you go again, check for any etchings on the urinals for a date.

McMenamins’ pubs on the west coast has got more than a few Hinsdale pissers in action. Check out the Cornelius Pass Roadhouse and more than a few of their other pubs for amazing bathroom facilities! ;-)
