Watch Polar Bears Unwrap Presents at the Central Park Zoo

Fact I just learned about polar bears, from David Attenborough: apparently their sense of smell is so acute that they can detect a baby seal under the ice from a MILE AWAY. That is ridiculous. And I think it means that the Central Park polar bear must be constantly tormented by the overpowering smell of seals, since they live like 50 feet apart. If I were that polar bear, I would probably wish for a chance to visit the harbor seal exhibit for Christmas. Just to say hello.

I would probably also thoroughly enjoy getting a giant fishsicle, which is what this polar bear will be unwrapping at 5:30 pm next Friday and Saturday, during the Central Park Zoo’s Winterfest celebration. The zoo staff also hands out presents to the penguins and the snow leopards, all free with the cost of admission. There are few things cuter than when animals act like people (otters holding hands!) so if you can find an excuse to do this I highly recommend it. More details here.

Katy B. grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the home of Gerald R. Ford, Andy Richter, and, at one point, the guy who wrote Mr. Holland's Opus. She moved to NYC for her degree in library science, and is now in the Media Studies program at The New School. She hopes to one day be a film studies librarian. Ask her anything about Dewey Decimal – anything! – and she will roll her eyes because academic libraries use Library of Congress. Durrr.
