6 Quick, Cheap NYC Daytrips with Your Boo
Don’t let being too cheap or broke get you down in taking a trip with your significant other! Not when spring is imminent! Here are 6 great daytrips from NYC:
1) Montauk
Going on the off-season is actually kind of cool, because it gives off a totally different vibe, PLUS it won’t be as annoyingly crowded. Walk along the beach, eat some lobster, buy some really insanely cheap chocolate. The only drawback is that this is a much easier trip if you have access to a car.
2) Governor’s Island
I’ve only been during the summer, but lemme tell ya, if you ave a fear of riding bikes, this is the place to get over it. You don’t even have to bring your own, because you can rent one and ride around the island like some freewheeling devil-may-care Isadora Duncan (minus the strangling). And you can go kayaking! And eat ice cream! And look at a bunch of semi-scary but cool abandoned army family houses with art exhibits in them! And there’s an old movie theatre! And it’s only a 15 minute ferry ride from lower Manhattan!
3) Staten Island
I know it sounds crazy, but seriously, when have you been to Staten Island and felt like you were still in New York City? Never. That’s when. If you’re a history buff, you might want to check out Historic Richmond Town, home to one of the oldest printing presses in America (nothing gets the blood flowing to your genitals like PRINT PRESSES!), and a bunch of Dutch Colonial and Greek revival architecture for you to gawk at, depending on how you feel about that sort of thing. It’s sort of like Governor’s Island, but less abandoned-y. ALSO, you can go to Killmeyer’s Old Bavaria Inn to get some German food and drink beer in a beer garden.
4) Storm King Sculpture Park
Storm King Sculpture Park is about an hour outside of the city, is not only an awesome place if you like modern sculpture, but it’s also quite beautiful there in the Hudson Valley– which is part of exactly why this sculpture park is unique. Instead of ignoring exteriors, they fully embrace it, making the weather an essential part of the experience.
5) New Haven, CT
If you’re really into burgers, Louis’ Lunch is a New Haven restaurant that claims to be home to the first burger ever made in the United States. I don’t really care if that’s true or not, but I’m really into places that want to impress you with their food. Speaking of which, I heard the pizza is really good there, though I’m not sure which places are the cream of the crop. Also, I guess you can go to Yale– they’re supposed to have a nice campus, right? I dunno. That was maybe a really Dad thing to say.
6) Freshkills Park
So did you hear that they’re turning the Fresh Kills landfill into a park and that it opened on March 27? Also, according to their website “Freshkills Park [is] three times the size of Central Park and the largest park developed in New York City in over 100 years”. Now dis I gaatta see.
