Just in case you haven’t been following the saga that is the impending closure of SoMa mainstay, the Eagle Tavern, the Guardian’s Emily Appelbaum gives a pretty good run-down up until this point here.
In addition, if you want to join in the rabble that have amassed to protest these proceedings, put on your cruisiest rags and head on down to a guerilla leather bar that is happening at the Skylark at 8 p.m. tonight. After all it wasn’t all that long ago that the space was known as La India Bonita, the other drag doyenne of 16th Street, and another queer space lost to the city’s hazy memory. It’s a small miracle that its batty sister, Esta Noche, is still around and not some precious swill mill, quite frankly.
It’s oft lamented how all these queer spaces have evaporated and how mainstream and commodified places like Castro Street have become, so let’s see if we can’t save South of Market from the whitewash.
Everyone is welcome so even if you don’t have a little sugar in your tank, come support anyway. You gotta love activism that only requires you to show up and drink.Surprise Leather Bar! at The Skylark (La India Bonita, R.I.P.)
