Get on the Broke-Ass-Oregon-Trail

So last weekend I went to Oregon for the first time in my life. I know – lame, that I had never been there before and it is just the next state away. But anyways – Oregon basically kicks ass and everything is so freakin’ cheap!

Here are five reasons why you should go to Oregon:

1) Free Coffee at Rest Stops

There are these great drive-thru coffee shops everywhere in Oregon. Dutch Brothers and The Human Bean are my faves. But if you are a real broke-ass just stop in one of the several rest stops off the freeway that offer FREE coffee throughout the state.

2) No Sale Tax

This is so rad. When you go into the store and you see the price says $1.99, it really is $1.99! So great! I was at a bar and my friend and I had two sandwiches with chips and a pickle, four beers a shot for just $27.00. That is insane.

3) Cheap Beers

There are tons of micro-breweries in Oregon. They usually make dark and delicious IPAs or hefty blonde beers. The best part about it is that they range from $2-$3 at most bars. In the stores it is even cheaper – you can get a 12-pack of good beer for under $14.

4) Food Carts

At least in Portland, you can eat awesome food for really a low-price in one of the many food-cart-hubs you stumble across. There are usually a hand-full of vendors selling the most creative food combos you can think of. I had the Putin Fries (with gravy and cheese curds), a white pizza with truffle oil, a broccoli-rabe sandwich and, get this – a chocolate-peanut-butter hot-pocket!

5) Bike Life

The only mode of transportation you need in Portland is your bike. Everybody is doing it. There are bike paths all of the city and there aren’t any of those crazy hills we have in San Francisco. Bikes are cost-efficient and time-saving. We drove up and threw our bikes on a bike-rack I bought for $50, and it seriously enhanced my stay in Portland. Riding through the neighborhoods of amazing houses and wonderful trees, is something that the average tourist wouldn’t really get to see. Trust me – bikes are the way to go in P-town.
