Mendocino County Fair and Apple Festival

Even (or maybe especially) the brokest of asses need an occasional escape from the daily grind.  It’s times like these dreary, seasonally ambiguous ones that can inspire major ennui (symptoms: sighing in cafes, fixating on the idea of frolicking along Norwegian fjords or across sun-drenched Spanish plains).  And what could be a better fix than something fried and on a stick?

The Mendocino County Fair and Apple Festival will be unfolding in all its greasy glory this weekend in Boonville, a town notable for having its own language, Boontling (though, it must be noted, most of the words seem to be slang for farm animals, alcohol, violent acts, or sexual practices).  Along with the usual sickening carnival rides and belching deep fat fryers will be tons of apples to taste and wine to drink – if that’s not a vicious and delicious cycle, I don’t know what is. Also on the docket: a real-deal rodeo, a Saturday night dance at which you can expect to twirl around a chipped-tooth country beauty, sheepdog trials, a parade, and unbeatable people watching.

Lucy Schiller - Destitute Dispatcher

Lucy's been able to live lots of places but holds her cornfed/pie-fueled Midwestern roots most dear, maintaining too loudly and too often that the Outer Richmond is the Midwest of SF: driven through to get elsewhere and knocked around for no reason (but what other neighborhood has bison?!). You can find Lucy letting things languish in her fridge, purposefully (limoncello!) or not (yogurt...), mouthbreathing, scouring Golden Gate Park for apartment-worthy items, sleepily serving up double nonfat half-caf-half-non-caf lattes at a certain cafe, skulking in various other ones, and yelling under cover of night and costume at SF Bike Party.
