Maoz is (sort of) a chain, but there’s only one in the Bay Area. I love the simple concept: they only sell pitas, falafel, and fries. And sure, I wouldn’t call it “authentic” Mediterranean food, but it is damn tasty.
So why even mention Maoz? The best thing about it is the unlimited toppings bar. For a reasonable price, you can get a basic pita but load it up with stuff like chick pea salad, slaw, cucumber salad, beets, tahini, and lots of others. Even more hungry? Get just a “falafel salad” and they give you a huge container to load up the extras, and you’ll be full for a while. It’s hard to get such a large meal for around $5.
Maoz is located in Berkeley, but it’s in the busy Telegraph Avenue district, so it’s worth the trip. Afterwards you can browse used CDs at Amoeba or Rasputin, and talk with some of the most interesting people.
