BA of the Week: Costume Designer Brittany Doohan

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Every week we feature a different person from the community shedding a little light on their life of brokeitude. Who knows, maybe you’ll learn something about the human spirit — probably not.

Wanna be a Broke-Ass of the Week? Holler at us here and we’ll send you the questionnaire.

This week’s featured broke-ass is San Francisco costume designer Brittany Doohan. When I asked Brittany what she wanted mentioned in the intro, this is what she had to say:

I am a broke-ass recent graduate, costume designer, writer and adventurer living in San Francisco, keeping happy by doing things I love and hanging out with people I love in the city I love.

Let’s see her tips for living the broke life.

Name: Brittany Doohan

Age: 24, soon to be a shiny quarter.

Occupation: Founder, designer, creator at Eliixir while day jobbing it as an administrative assistant.

What neighborhood do you live in?: The lovely Inner Sunset for the summer, then somewhere else awesome in San Francisco.

Best money saving tip: Bring your lunch, learn to cook, buy Charles Shaw and light candles. Saving money IS as sexy as it sounds.

What do you refuse to spend money on?: TV shows and news.

Most expensive thing you’ve ever bought: A Volkswagen GTI.

How’d that feel?: Should have gotten a Jeep Wrangler.

Favorite cheap eat: Taco Tuesday!

Favorite dive bar: Elbo Room during happy hour!

Best deal you’ve ever gotten: All the free booze at Burning Man.

Favorite free thing to do: Basking in the Dolores Park sunshine with great people.

If you woke up a millionaire, what’s the first thing you’d buy?: An English bulldog named Louie! Then a Jeep Wrangler.

Despite not having money, do you still love your life?: The best part about not having money is realizing all the amazing stuff you can do for free or on the cheap… it gets the creative juices flowing!

Do you own my book?: I do not, but I am a big fan and follow daily on Facebook!

Best hangover cure: Bottomless mimosas then a nap in the park.

Are you a hipster?: I am your father.
