Your favourite ladies: Barker, Gray & Posey.

The podcast moonscape is a wilderness pock marked with craters of banality and that, which can only be described as celestially sublime. If you have traversed through the darkness and have yet to hear Lady to Lady, you are indeed missing out one of these hour-long slices of heaven.

In full disclosure, I am biased towards this weekly gabfest because I have known one of its contributors, Tess Barker, since a time now shrouded in the dank mists of my brain. We met in a production of Oliver! I was a hack, gay theatre nerd and she was an incandescent, feral child actress who lived in Ventura County’s own version of Villa Villekula, spent her free time taking cruises with the cast of Full House, being trampled by escaped llamas and urinated on by the occasional African lion. In short, a pedigree which has amply prepared her for a life on the air.

In her weird sisters, Barbara Gray and Brandie Posey, she has found the perfect collaborators. Working comedians, they can eviscerate the vainglorious clown parade that is Hollywood without sounding like some saddlebag with eyes one might encounter at three in the afternoon at the Frolic Room, but also just as easily discuss the travails of negotiating a biker bar in Big Bear only to successfully bed a sailor in the Winnie the Pooh suite.

Though the material may be tad more ribald than in her day, I think what’s most enjoyable about their weekly roundtables is that they are not unlike the afternoon hash outs I remember as a kid, in the company of my mother and aunts when that first glass of white zin had kicked in and they could take stock in the cavalcade of insanity that life on this planet as woman can be. A familiar repast to anyone who grew up amongst women; an enjoyable catharsis, lady to lady.

Stephen's early years were spent in a boxcar overlooking downtown Los Angeles. From there he moved around the state with his family before settling under the warm blanket of smog that covers suburban Southern California. Moving around led to his inability to stay in one place for very long, but San Francisco has been reeling him back in with its siren song since 1999.
By trade he pours booze, but likes to think he can write and does so occasionally for the SF Bay Guardian, Bold Italic and 7x7. He also likes to enjoy time spent in old eateries, bars and businesses that, by most standards, would have been condemned a long time ago.
