As you may have heard incumbent Mayor Ed Lee got enough votes to stay in office.  Meanwhile the 3 candidates who stood for progressive San Francisco values combined for 44,594 votes and counting, and that is nothing to scoff at.  Francisco Herrera, Amy Farah Weiss, and our very own Stuart Schuffman combined to win nearly 36% of the electorate with no major funding or endorsements from the establishment.  They should be very proud of that.

The fact that the sitting mayor wins only 56% of the vote when running against candidates with no major funding is a testament to how much Lee is disliked in San Francisco.  And other election results show his declining power as well.

Aaron Peskin won District 3 unseating Lee’s personally appointed Julie Christensen! As Supervisor David Campos told the crowd at the El Rio Election Night Party last night, “We now have a Progressive Majority in the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.”  And that is a big victory for our city and it’s values.

As for Tom Temprano and Broke-Ass Stuart losing their bids for office, Former State Assemblymen and SF political legend Tom Ammiano spoke to the crowd and reminded what San Francisco still stands for, “We are ahead of the game, we are progressive, and we are populous, elections are a numbers game and sometimes numbers hurt, sometimes you feel disappointed, sometimes you feel like pouring gasoline all over City Hall and lighting match…I am not encouraging that! Those rumors about me at the White Night Riots are not true!…We have a very very bright future, for the people here it’s not only a matter of politics, it’s a matter of morality, it’s a matter of heart, and that is why we will win in the future.”

“We have a very very bright future, for the people here it’s not only a matter of politics, it’s a matter of morality, it’s a matter of heart, and that is why we will win in the future.” – Tom Ammiano

prop-f

Prop F was defeated by Airbnb and Ron Conway’s 8 million plus dollars.  Incredibly, Airbnb managed to buyout all the ad space on the San Francisco Examiner on election day.  The San Francisco Examiner was clearly in support of Prop F.  Their Op Ed on the subject was called:  “No Other Option but to Support Prop F.”  But on election day they couldn’t resist that sweet sweet Airbnb money, and their realestate was bought by the opposition.  Take a look at the insane amount of ‘No on F’ ads, across the SF Examiner’s platform on Election Day:

no on f examiner

Airbnb’s “No on F” bought the SF Examiner’s entire homepage despite the paper being irrevocably in support of the proposition

The ‘No on F’ mercenaries were everywhere on Election Day, and reportedly spend over $629 on each ‘No’ vote. They taped large ‘No on F’ signs on front doors and of course decorated the city with ridiculous billboards using scare tactics and lies to sway the vote.  Their money simply could not be stopped, a metaphor for what is happening to a lot of San Francisco these days.

So we lost I and F, but we won J, and we won a progressive majority on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Look out Lee, because the real San Francisco Left is coming, we’ve got the Board, the moral high ground, and as Tom Ammiano put it, the future is very very bright.
