Send us Your Fiction So We Can Publish It!

fiction-a-to-z

Broke-Ass Stuart is now accepting fiction submissions! Here’s a short guide to what we are looking for.

CONTENT & STYLE

We’re looking for stories that surprise us.

Your words should grip the reader from the first sentence and never let go. Remember that the average online reader has 11.7 tabs open at once. You have to compete with all that and win.

Stories about writers, drunks, vampires, cancer, hobos, and suicide (teenage or otherwise) will only be considered if they are truly mind-blowing.

See Vonnegut on semicolons: ‘They only prove you’ve been to college.’

And Fitzgerald on exclamation points: ‘An exclamation point is like laughing at your own joke.’

LENGTH

We believe in earned length. That is to say, we’ll serialize your novel if it’s good enough. But in general, keep it tight.

We welcome novel excerpts.

PAY

Yes, we pay our contributors. We can’t pay you much, but it’s more than you’ll get from a number of journals that shall remain nameless.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Broke-Ass Stuart purchases First North American Serial Rights (FNASR), meaning we reserve the right to publish your piece before anyone else. After publication, all rights revert back to the author.

We do accept simultaneous submissions, but please notify us immediately if it is accepted elsewhere.

Previously published work will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

SUBMIT

Send your best stuff to: Fiction@BrokeAssStuart.com

WE’RE ALSO LOOKING FOR ARTWORK

We want stunning artwork and photography, from Bay Area artists and beyond, to feature alongside our fiction pieces. The only guideline here is ‘don’t suck.’

Charles Daly - Cut-Rate Curmudgeon

Charles has stories in a number of small journals, but who doesn't? He lives in east Asia and works on an Olivetti typewriter named 'Lovely Rita.' All his heroes died of syphilis in the 19th century.
