Self-Care Tips for All Year Around

This time of year can be hard for many people. Sometimes we’re so busy helping others that we forget to take care of ourselves. I’ve learned how important self-care is, especially during difficult times like the holidays and recently with the not-my-president-elect. Here are some tips to help you in case you need a little reminding.

  • Read a book                               reading
  • Unplug from social media for a while (our minds can’t handle all the negativity and drama online)
  • Write (sometimes the best therapy is to get it out on paper)
  • Listen to music (or play music instruments)        music is life
  • Treat yourself to a little massage or some form of pampering
  • Exercise or walk: do an activity that makes you feel good physically, even if it’s sex (wink)
  • Cook and eat good food (drink some wine or beer too, but don’t overdo it)
  • Get a good night sleep (get off electronic devices an hour before you go to bed)
  • Netflix and chill solo (go ahead and enjoy shows that are relaxing for you without having to entertain someone else)                            netflix
  • Garden
  • Surround yourself with people who are positive and supportive (even if it means distancing yourself from toxic people who are family or friends)
  • Take a mini road trip to another city and explore
I know I forgot some other things but I’m sure you can think of things that you enjoy doing alone. Read books to change your way of thinking and life because those tools help us for the rest of our lives. We don’t have to be rich financially but we need to be rich mentally and physically. I’m a single mom, and  my daughter asks to stay home because she’s tired of getting up and running during the week. When we are at home, we do our own thing. She’s in 3rd grade so she enjoys reading books or playing with her dolls. So, children needs self-care as much as adults do.
Take a break from the world to protect your sanity. It’s okay to stay home in your funky pajamas on a Saturday or Sunday, especially when all you do is get up and go to work every day. Or doing something for yourself as little as 30 minutes to an hour can impact the way you feel every day. Work towards your dreams. Give yourself something to look forward to before you jump out of bed for a busy day. Make a list of goals you want to accomplish so you will have some guidance. Once you master self-care, it becomes easier. You may be alone but you won’t be lonely or bored. That’s self-love and you’ll feel a lot better when you have taken time out for yourself.
