540 Club: The Quintessential Dive

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Much has been written about 540 Club, and for good reason.  As stated above, it is, in my opinion, the quintessential dive bar.  If you consider yourself a loyal patron of San Francisco dives, you’ve been to this bar.  If not – read on.

The atmosphere is usually pretty mellow as the majority of the patrons are locals.  Out front you will find a handful of tables at which to drink your libation of choice.  Inside you will notice the bar, which runs nearly the entire length of the fine establishment.  For entertainment purposes, there is a jukebox as well as a pool table near the rear.  Most of the time, it’s pretty easy to get a game going with a friend or complete stranger.

You will find all sorts of Giants memorabilia adorning the walls (You can usually find any Giants game on one of their two screens).  There are also a number of interesting pictures hanging just above the wall opposite the bar.

“So, why should I head to this place for my next drink?” you may be asking yourself.  Here’s the rundown –
Open from 11:00a.m. – 2:00a.m. every day (That includes holidays for all you haters of the awkward Christmas family gathering.)
Happy hour is every weekday from 4:00p.m. – 7:00p.m. – three bucks for all well drinks and regular pints
On Mondays all well drinks are only one dollar from 10:00p.m. – Midnight
On Tuesdays cocktails are only two bucks from 10:00p.m. – Midnight (Guys, if you’re looking for a place to satisfy your urge for a lemon drop, stop on by.  It’s alright.)

By the way, if you run into a friendly, knowledgeable bartender by the name of Craig, buy him a shot.  He’s a good dude.
