Benefit Concert for Ourshelves Lending Library This Wednesday 5/1

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

If you’ve been reading this site for awhile you know how big a fan of reading I am. It’s one of my favorite things in the world, so much so that I pretty much won’t fuck someone who doesn’t read books. Alright, maybe I’ll fuck them, but definitely not date them.

Ourshelves is a rad organization devoted to putting lending libraries in places where people without access to the public library (like those living in shelters), can still have the books of their choice. Awesome right? Here’s a little more about them in their words:

Ourshelves has built libraries at a homeless shelter, seniors and disabled center and an emergency domestic violence shelter. Ourshelves has also provided college prep material to local non-profit ScholarMatch. There are twelve more shelters in San Francisco that have asked for their assistance finding books and shelving. This benefit will allow them to purchase building materials for shelter libraries. Without the shelves, there is no place to allow access to books.

Ourshelves will continue using member dues toward building in shelters, but will also need more funding to meet the needs of those who have asked for their help.

How can you not wanna help? Well, luckily you can while having fun too! Dawn Oberg and 50 Mason Social House are sponsoring a benefit concert to raise funds for Ourshelves. The benefit concert will feature live performances by two local San Francisco artists Dawn Oberg and Ira Marlowe. Tickets are $10 and obviously the funds are going to a good cause: reading and shit.

Also, check out Dawn Oberg’s new San Francisco love song called “Civic High”.
