LAST CHANCE FOR CRAFTY GIFTS!

The Christmas countdown is getting intense — only three more days until I get to sit nervously around a table with 20 relatives and their annoying kids, wondering if my sister will spill a full glass of red wine on my cream-colored dress again (true story) or my boyfriend will be the first one to grab the gravy boat and, not realizing the lid isn’t secure, proceed to pour the entire contents on his plate, rendering the whole group gravyless (another true story).

Until then, I need to stay focused and finish buying gifts.  People keep popping up that I’m apparently supposed to give something to — ex-roommates, sister’s boyfriend’s kid, brow waxing lady.  Real Mercantile might be the last chance I have to peruse a bunch of crafty gifts in the same place.  You might be thinking “ANOTHER FREE craft faire?”  Well, duh.  Did you forget you live in San Francisco?  Plus, this one’s taking place at Chez Poulet, which is cool, and there will be mulled wine  (perfect rainy day drink), eats (including banana leaf tamales!), and, obviously, handmade gifts from the likes of Recycled Glass Works, Dorklandia and By Nieves, among others.

Christmastime isn’t always the best time of year for a broke-asses dwindling bank account, but I figure if you have to buy stuff anyway, might as well support local art.  Okay, fine.  This whole post is really just an excuse to go chug some mulled wine.  Happy holidays!

Christy Jovanelly - Cheapskate Commentator

When Christy announced she was leaving her family's Southern California home and moving to San Francisco, her mom said, "Have fun in that den of sin." This is the only (however sarcastic) advice Christy has ever taken from her mom, who also told her to join eharmony.com and cover her eyes during sex scenes in movies. Christy puts her creative writing degree to good use by locating the typos on Chinese food menus and spends most of her time challenging friends to all-you-can-eat contests and trying to get that one bartender at Zeitgeist to smile.
