The Sycamore Now Serves Weekday Brunch Because…Why Not?

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

My friends at the Sycamore in the Mission just alerted me to good news: They now serve weekday brunch! That means that, if your dream “personal health day” includes bottomless mimosas, you’ve just found the perfect spot.

When owners Liz and Tim Ryan reached out to me with this announcement they said:

Happily we weathered the pandemic, but business still hasn’t bounced back as much as we had hoped, so we put together a plan starting this week. Weekday Brunch! Our bottomless mimosa brunches have been a huge success since we started doing them 10 or so years ago and we thought there’s enough demand to do them every weekday!

The Monday through Friday menu features some of their brunch menu as well as most of their lunch and dinner options. This makes their weekday fare a hybrid, so there’s something for everyone. And now they even encourage reservations. You can call in to 415-252-7704 to make one.

After getting all this info though, I decided I wanted to hear the story of how the Sycamore came to be, so I asked Liz to give me a run down of their nearly 13 year history, which I’m sharing below:

The Sycamore opened on July 19, 2010. My brother Tim and I were so excited to find a spot in the Mission with an outdoor space that had previously been overlooked and underutilized. We wanted our bar to be a haven for the neighborhood, one with an unfussy, relaxed environment. We loved the intimate space in the main bar area and the welcoming patio where folks could bring their friends and dogs and feel completely at home.

We were inspired by our favorite hangouts in the city — Lucky 13, The 500 Club, Benders, and the like. We wanted to create that sort of environment, coupled with tasty food and carefully curated beer and wine.

Every neighborhood needs a comfy dive bar, so we set out to make the Sycamore cozy and inviting, but not without an edge fitting for the vibe of the Mission. Murals by local artists adorn much of the outside walls, and we always have a rotating display of local art inside the bar.

Soon after opening, we started weekend brunch and it immediately became a huge hit, bringing people from all around the city and Bay Area. Our weekend bottomless mimosa brunches are like a party where you don’t know many folks when you arrive, but end up leaving with a whole bunch of new friends. We had a regular who came in with her dog often. One time, her dog got off leash and they were seperated. The dog instinctually came to The Sycamore for brunch and waited dutifully for her mommy in the nook of the patio. They were happily united, and that really sealed the fact that The Sycamore is more than just a neighborhood bar. It’s a special gathering space.

I strongly believe that small, family-owned businesses are what creates the heartbeat of the city and specifically the Mission district. When you walk in, you are part of what makes San Francisco weird and awesome. Sure there may be some odd characters and sketchy vibes, but that’s absolutely what this city is all about. We share the space and make it a uniquely intimate environment. Artists, outlaws, introverts, extroverts, and the lonely hearted are all welcome with acceptance and a damn good beer.

So treat yourself to some weekday brunch and support this local business
