Discover new treasures at the Treasure Island Flea Market

Updated: Aug 30, 2011 07:32
The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

I’ve been going to flea markets since I was a wee-little one. That’s where my parents used to buy me my shit load of My Little Ponies I collected. We’d buy used CDs, DVDs, and books; new hair and face products for really cheap; sometimes I’d even buy old purses or jewelry…you know, cuz I’ve always been super cool and into that vintage thing. Okay, okay, so I’m a big fan of the flea market, you see, and am realllly excited about this weekend’s huuuuge event.

The Treasure Island Flea Market. Yes! Their site describes it as “an urban open-air market,” where many local Bay Area designers, collectors, makers, artists, crafters, specialty food purveyors, local wineries and entertainment gather on this historical little island to showcase their best work. And for broke-asses like myself, I’m all for it! (I even have my old red Radio Flyer wagon dusted off and ready for the occasion.)

The downside: there’s a $3 entrance fee (yeah, first entrance fee I’ve had to pay for a flea market)

The upside: it’s ONLY a $3 entrance fee, and parking is FREE! Kids ages 12 and under are also allowed FREE admission. It’s also a dog-friendly environment, as long as he/she is on a trusty leash. So bring Pluto, or Snoopy, or whoever you got at home that’s just itching to get out of the house and run around.

Best of all, the Treasure Island Flea Market takes place every last Saturday and Sunday of each month! Awesome, I know! See you there! (I’ll be the one with waaaay to many treasures, more than my wallet or bank account can afford. But I guess that’s why I’m a broke-ass….sigh…)

Next Show: This Saturday and Sunday, August  27 – 28,  2011  9am – 4pm   $3 Admission, FREE Parking Treasure Island, (Off I-80 Bay Bridge, in between San Francisco and Oakland)   Upcoming dates: September 24-25, 2011 October 29-30, 2011 November 26-27, 2011

Paulette Greenhouse - The Penny Pincher

Paulette Greenhouse is a journalist and graphic designer, obsessed with her beloved pet hedgehog, Lisa Pickles. Seriously, she can talk about that prickly little princess for days! Paulette enjoys fashion, music, and art (cool points are gained if DIY). Although she tells outsiders that she lives in San Francisco, Paulette actually lives in nearby Pacifica because she can't afford to be that cool. The truth is she hates money and believes that it is source of many major problems in the world. But since society has made money so damn important for adequate survival, she slaves away at a lame local corporate restaurant, receiving crappy tips from people even cheaper than she is. (damn!) But above all, Paulette believes in giving exact change– it's a way of life!
