Twitter Accounts Worth Tweeting About

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

I don’t normally support Twitter because I really can’t get behind our ever-expanding ADD culture and also because I truly believe that reading really boring half-thoughts about the minutiae of people’s days will give me early onset Alzheimer’s. (Though in truth, there are a few celebrity accounts that I somewhat follow via Tracie on Jezebel; I just can’t allow myself to miss out on gems like the days Tila Tequila decides to draft segments of her memoir.)

However, I’ve recently been introduced to two accounts that have made me reconsider the genius of Twitter: White Girl Problems and Being Gay Is Gay.

White Girl Problems is so. fucking. funny. It makes me pee. “That was my last Adderall.” “Fuck. I left those shoes in Dubai.” “I just need to make sure that I’m being heard.” THIS IS BRILLIANT. When I read these, I feel like I’m recounting a bizarre overheard to a friend '“ one of those where the story ends with, “I mean, you can’t write this stuff!” But apparently, somebody does. And that’s what I can get behind on Twitter: using profiles as a creative platform that isn’t masturbatory or self-aggrandizing. This isn’t someone promoting their latest blog entry or posting a congratulatory pat on the back for finishing a chapter in their novel that’s in talks of getting published soon, I swear! White Girl Problems is simultaneously making jokes and social commentary; it picks a theme and it sticks with it, and it’s consistently hysterical.

Being Gay Is Gay is brand new and thus hasn’t developed momentum yet, but I really think it has the potential to go viral. It pokes fun at gay male subcultures in a non-contrived way and it’s very, very funny. I think jokes involving lispy, Barbara Streisand-loving, ultra effeminate fag stereotypes are really tired. This Twitter seems to be going down a different path with posts like, “when i was 19, all i wore was marc by marc jacobs. now that i’m older and mature, i only wear APC.”

What are you favorite Twitters? Post them in the comment thread!
