Hey, would you look at that? Print media’s not dead, it’s just gone small-scale. If things like Indie Mart and Etsy can renew the public’s interest in lovingly-crafted stuffed animals and recycled jewelry, why can’t someone do the same for all those things we’d rather read on paper than on a computer screen?

This year marks SF Zinefest’s 9th year celebrating litmags, fanzines, comics and anything else that deserves to be put down on a piece of paper and xeroxed. Think about that: 9 years is longer than some magazines have managed to last. So whether you’re looking to start the next Broke-Ass publishing house or you just like to treat your reading material like some people treat rare records, then perusing the aisles this weekend at the SF County Fair Building in Golden Gate Park seems like a good way to spend an afternoon.

From the plate glass windows and penny arcades to the small plate restaurants and stylish swill holes, Mission Street changes her gown to accommodate her guests as often as the seasons change elsewhere.

Somewhere in between the women in the picture hats and the latest bumper crop of flannel and hair, there was a time when the action centered on chrome, gasoline, high-gloss paint, impeccable coiffure and pride.

The weekend ritual of cruising Mission Street, is documented in Why I Ride: Low and Slow, presented by the Conscious Youth Media Crew, Debra Koffler, and Vero Majano this  Friday at the Koret Auditorium at the De Young as part of the Mission Muralismo Series.

It will profile lowriding in the Mission as a weekly ritual where you got to show off your ride and see old friends as well as being a  form of solidarity even in the face of law enforcement and mainstream stigmatization.

Reflect again in the glow of headlights and the neon theatre marquees.

Vintage Nintendo in a rainforest?

We love Nightlife at the California Academy of Sciences. Not only are the tickets half the price of regular museum admission (only $12!), but it’s 21+ so there are never any snot-nosed kids kicking the back of your chair in the planetarium (which boasts the most accurate rendering of the universe ever created). Every week, on top of the usual exhibits they also bring in additional shows, exhibitors or DJs to keep things from feeling too museum-like, and this week they’re bringing the game night experts from homefrys so you can make some new friends over a couple of rounds of Jenga, Catchphrase and everyone’s favorite: Apples to Apples.

MORE IMPORTANTLY: They’ll be bringing along Wii sports and Old School Nintendo, hopefully on some sort of unnecessarily large screen, so you can relive that childhood you wasted in your friend’s basement pounding the PowerPad in Track & Field. Although, you might not want to let the penguins see you playing Duck Hunt, that just seems cruel.

And don’t forget, if you’re birthday is within 7 days of any Nightlife event, you can get FREE admission.

Yes, neighbors, it’s time for the fall edition of the Divis Art Walk — and I’m not going to be there.  I wish I was, though, because the last art walk here was described to me as “crazy, fratty drunkenness taking over the sidewalks,” and that’s definitely my kind of art walk.  And this one has a couple new things in the works that make it sound extra fun (dammit).

First, Orange is offering free bang trims.  I’m sorry, but as a girl, that’s pretty exciting.  And guys, don’t be scurred — you know you have “bangs,” that hair that falls across your forehead, and you know it needs a trim.  Tonight’s the night.  Also, for those of you who were supposed to meet me at the last art walk but couldn’t find parking, Touchless Carwash is offering FREE parking (and 20% off all the items in their gift shop, which the folks at Haighteration say is AWESOME).

Also, if you haven’t gotten your cheap live music fix in the last couple weeks, first of all, shame on you, because there’s been ample opportunity.  Secondly, go ahead and make it up to me and yourself tonight by seeing the California Honeydrops at The Page from 6pm-8pm while enjoying $3 pints of Sierra Nevada.  As usual, there’s amazing food and drink deals at some of your favorite spots, like half off on on all classic sushi rolls & hand rolls at Tsunami from 5:30pm – 7pm and $2 beer at Cafe Abir.

There’s also gonna be a lot of art around.  I guess that makes sense.  One thing you should make sure to check out before you get too tipsy on Blue Jay Cafe’s $2 sangria is Workshop’s Kelly Malone’s art show at Matching Half on McAllister and Baker.

Roberto Miguel aka Miggy Stardust

Introduce yourself!

I’m Roberto Miguel. I play folk music and also play trombone in Citizen Fish and Star Fucking Hipsters and I dj as Miggy Stardust. I make art. I put on a lot of shows too. I’m hella busy, actually.

What is Hoodstock?

Hoodstock is a DIY fest built around showcasing a diverse music scene at an accessible price. We started in Oakland and I brought it to Brooklyn and next is Los Angeles.

How did it all begin?

It was started by Albert Luera(DJ Handsome Neto) and Gabe Santos. They put together an awesome show with their friends and other local bands . They had been consistently booking awesome shows at the housewhere they lived, “Locos Only.” The next year I linked it up with Brooklyn artists Japanther and Ninjasonik in an attempt to help fuel new collaborations and spotlight Oakland’s underground to other cities. I also incorporated local hip hop artists in an effort to bring them into Oaklands DIY punk scene. The result was the best kind of complete insanity, starting with the craziest party I ‘ve ever been to and continuing to the present, filling most of my life with shows, dance parties, and fests.

I got involved because I’d seen a lot of cities with awesome events like” Best Friends Day” in Richmond,VA or BlackLabel’s Bikekill and thought that Oakland really needed something like this. Gabe and Albert are amazing and gifted at putting on shows and I had toured throughout the U.S. and lived in New York and we were all pretty driven so we collaborated and turned Hoodstock into the insanity it is today.

Where did it all begin and how did it get to NY and LA ?

It started in here in Oakland. Me and Albert hooked up with ”Dirty Finger,” my favorite DJ in Brooklyn, and Bikes in the Kitchen. I called in favours from all the bands I’d booked on the West Coast and everybody really came together and made it something unbelievable. I knew we had to take it to other cities after that.

What’s up with the venues?

The main night is at Oakland Metro Opera House. It’s amazing and was pretty much the only place big enough. I had been there numerous times for “Tourettes Without Regrets”, a crazy ass poetry slam/MC battle. The Sunday venue is a big open space in West Oakland. I saw it for the first time when they showed Warriors there for free after a community bike ride. I was sold.

One of the sponsors is Bikes 4 Life. Who are they?

Bikes 4 Life is a grassroots bicycle shop serving the community of West Oakland. They put on a lot of events and bike rides promoting peace , health, and unity. I’m really glad to be working with them.

How much are the events?

It’s cheap, its $7 dollars for Saturday night and the rest is by donation.

What is the newly added event on the 6th about (“Acoustic Hangover Relief”)?

The sixth is for singers and songwriters to showcase their stuff and to help raise some money for Blackdot Café. Its also a mellow end to a crazy ass weekend.

What IS the best hangover cure (aside from acoustic music)?

Well I’m vegan straightedge so I’m not really the best to ask about a hangover cure but I hear Menudo works best.

That’s a pretty rad website name. How did that start up?

“Kick it for life” came from a song by “Tha Pessamist.” It became the chant for Hoodstock last year and, for better or worse, some people’s personal motto.

This sounds like one hell of an event.  In honor of Michael Jackson’s birthday (which was yesterday I think) the weekly Monday party, Testarossa is throwing an MJ themed night.  Not only do you get a FREE margarita if you show up before 11pm, but there will also be FREE face painting, a FREE photo booth, and the bartenders will all be dressed like it’s the 80’s.  Hell, everyone probably will be.  Plus, considering it’s at Trigger, I’d bet there’s gonna be some male go-go dancers.  Let’s just hope those boys haven’t kept their bikini lines looking like it’s the 80’s!   Peep this description of tonight’s party from yelp, it’s really well done:

Too bad it costs…NOTHING! That’s right. You’re in for the night of your life.

Let’s just say Jay Foster can shake some motherfucking pots and pans. I’d rather talk about the fried chicken. I mean really, have you had that chicken? It’s mind bendingly good. People shouldn’t be allowed to make something taste that good; doesn’t Jay realize there are those of us out there with addictive personalities? But don’t worry if chicken’s not your thing, Farmer Brown also puts out banging shrimp & grits, pulled pork, and even veggie jambalya for you meat-a-phobics.

So here’s the deal: buy this Broke Buck for only $20 and then march your cute ass down to Farmer Brown and get yourself $40 worth of grub. Unbelievable right? Yeah, it’s because I love you.

The bar of my Irish dreams

While it’s true that a real broke-ass, if craving the fancy brunch drink made up of OJ and champagne, might just walk around the corner to the liquor store and buy a $5 bottle of Cook’s (probably at that point just skipping the OJ altogether), there all instances in which finding a good bottomless mimosa brunch is necessary or you just fucking feel like going to one (like you need a LOT of hair of the dog or your best friend is visiting for the day from Sacramento and you’re trying to entice her to move to the city.  Through alcohol).

Now, there are reasonable all-you-can-drink prices and there are downright expensive ones.  I consider myself privileged to live by a spot, Nickies, that despite being a sports bar, has a reputation for serving delicious food and the fact of offering $8 bottomless mimosas on their weekend brunch menu.

You do have to buy a brunch item to get the $8 deal, but hopefully you WOULD be eating something if you planned to sit somewhere and get hammered for three hours anyway.  On top of that, the prices for brunch dishes are all in the $8 range (I recommend the breakfast sandwich with house potatoes, because I’m obsessed with sandwiches, or the french toast, because that’s almost a sandwich), which isn’t bad.

Another tip:  If there are no big games on, be prepared to enjoy the company of your friends (or yourself, if you’re the lone wolf type) because the bar is likely to be pretty dead during brunch hours.  This is good, meaning the server will have nothing else to do but attend to your mysteriously perpetually-empty champagne flute.

Four Barrel is turning 2 on Monday and like every good party for a two-year old there will be a petting zoo (wha?), photo booth, cake, and coffee!

From their twitter feed: “We just booked a pony for the kiddies. Seriously. 12-2 on Monday, along with cake, free drinks all day 7-4. Closing early for staff party.” If it’s twatted, it must be true, right? The event is also mentioned on Funcheapsf, with reference to the petting zoo and surprises, so much like every year for my birthday, my pony expectations are high.

I hope ponies don’t drink coffee because that means less FREE coffee for me. If anyone’s looking for me on Monday, you’ll know where to find me. I’ll be somewhere in the sea of flannel, crying into my latte because my parents didn’t love me enough to throw me this awesome of a birthday party. Either that or trying to shove an overcaffeinated equine into a photo booth for BFF pictures. It’s shaping up to be a good week.

If you were into vampires long before the new, sparkly, abstinent breed came along, then you’ve surely been yearning for a taste of the dingier, old-school blood suckers. This Saturday and Sunday, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts will be screening Carl Theodore Dreyer’s, 1932 classic, “Vampyr” to satiate all your undead needs. The website summarizes:

Unquestionably one of the greatest vampire films, Vampyr is the tale of a student of the occult who is confronted by the presence of a mysterious evil in a village outside of Paris. A totally uncompromising filmmaker, Dreyer creates an overwhelming atmosphere of dread, with austere, deliberately obscured imagery and an unsettling, unstable narrative.

I love me a good horror movie, and while mummies are more my thing (NOT zombies. NEVER zombies.), everyone needs a 78-year-old blood sucker in their lives every now and then.
