a.Muse welcomes artists Hugh and David D’Andrade—two cousins from opposite sides of the California divide: San Francisco and Los Angeles. This first time collaboration from the cousins will consist of Hugh’s graphic, colorful, sometimes politically charged editorial, book and poster illustrations. David is a former San Francisco artist now residing in Los Angeles. David creates colorful abstract painting/collages which explore the use of the brushstroke as an element of focus while referencing paint application and digital technology. A free public reception for this exhibition will be held on Saturday, January 7th 2012 from 6 to 9:30 pm.
Hugh, the younger of the cousins, was greatly inspired by his cousin David’s art. “David could draw superheroes better than anyone!” Forty years later, both David and Hugh are working artists, with shared sensibilities but very different styles. David makes paintings, drawings and collages which grapple the fine line between abstraction and representation. Hugh is known for his graphic poster art and illustration. Though they have admired each others’ work for years, this is their first joint show and collaboration.
“My work is a meager attempt to critique the bloated canon of abstract painting in reference to Abstract Expressionism,” says David whose interest “is to merge the implied action of the digital versus the physicality of the brushstroke.”
Hugh’s work, though similarly colorful, couldn’t be more different in theme.
“What I do is ‘graphic art.’ People use that term to describe commercial art, but I think the term should be used more broadly to describe artwork that is clear, simple and direct, and that seeks a broad audience using the straightforward tricks that have been used by artists for centuries: composition, narrative, myth (aka “pop culture” in today’s world), typography, and color. Lots of color.”
Both artists seek a more immediate and less conceptual response from the viewer, something immediately apparent when considering the work. Words like fun and playful come to mind, and the exhibit at a.Muse promises to be just that.
