FREE New York Philharmonic Concert in Central Park

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Central Park was designed under the philosophy that nature should be looked at and reflected upon, and never touched. So when the park first opened, children had to have notes from their principals to play baseball in the fields. Obviously, these traditions did not last in the park. Now it’s a place where runners, walkers, tourists, dog owners, ice cream vendors, wedding parties, break dancers, trophy wives, small children, guys painted like statues, pigeons, raccoons, etc. frolic freely throughout the trees, bushes and paths. Central Park is also one of the best places in the city to see free stuff.

Tomorrow night, the New York Philharmonic and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra are playing a FREE concert on the Great Lawn, with a fireworks show afterward. Sitting in the grass and listening to classical music is probably the closet thing you can do to honor the original spirit of the park, but you should totally get up and cozy in the grass while you’re watching. And hey, how often can you bring a picnic to a classical concert? Or show up in your most tattered pair of jorts? (The answer is: at least once a summer in NYC).

Kiley E - Ragamuffin Researcher

After years of denial, Kiley has finally admitted to baring a striking resemblance to Velma from Scooby Doo. Instead of traveling in a van hunting ghosts, she prefers wandering on foot in search of tacos, cheap beer, and fake birds. Growing up in Portland, Kiley enjoyed the balance of urban and green spaces. Then she spent her four years at Ithaca College, and found herself craving more sprawling asphalt in her life. So she moved to Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where most of the buildings look like they're about to collapse. Kiley's favorite activities include: getting lost, crafting, sewing, biking, and geeking out at museums. Her love of taxidermy probably makes her a terrible vegetarian, but she doesn't care.
