Dance It Out at Toca Tuesdays at Sutra

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

I’m always looking for ways to work out some energy by hitting the dance floor without paying the price of my first-born child for a drink, and sometimes just dancing around my living room is not enough. So, when I feel the need to get down to some old school hip hop and top 40s jams, I head to Toca Tuesdays at Sutra Lounge. Sutra gets crowded on the weekends, but on a Tuesday night, the mix of people is perfect and the music is exactly what you need to let loose and boogie it out. You can take a musical trip from DJ Kool’s “Let Me Clear My Throat” to some Drake’s “Make Me Proud,” or even slow-jam it to Frank Ocean’s “Thinking About You.”

Resident DJ Tony Touch has an arsenal of danceable rap and hip hop ready, and you can even catch acts like ?uest Love, KOOL Herc, and Talib behind the ones and twos. The musical selections are not just restricted to hip hop though, with booty-shaking reggae and soul guaranteed to make it into the set every week.

The party is 21+, but there’s no cover, and you can even get reduced drinks if you check in on Foursquare (just take the effort, it’s totally worth it).

Tiara Francis - NY Know-it-all

Tiara Francis - NY Know-it-all

Tiara was born in NYC, raised in NJ, and after studying Comp Lit at Columbia, vowed to never go back to the suburbs. While she has expensive taste, she also has shallow pockets and is always looking for a budget way to be a weekend warrior. Her hobbies include laughing way too loudly, putting hot sauce on/in everything - including margaritas - speaking French at inappropriate moments, and dancing like there’s no one else in da club.
