Black Sheep Pub

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Right now, I’m sitting at Black Sheep, drinking a surprisingly decent three-dollar glass of wine while five other two-person groups/couples (still trying to figure out if the two girls sitting across the bar are lesbians) talk quietly, and/or watch sports going on somewhere behind me.  My friend is sitting next to me, behind several open books that cover our two tables.  She’s working on her thesis for grad school.  Watching her, I start missing school – miss having my mind constantly strained.  Anyway…

Black Sheep is a pleasant, no-frills bar tucked away quietly on Bergen St. in northeast Park Slope.  It’s a simple square: half painted Irish-green and the other speckled yellow.  Behind me the projector projects sports directly on the wall over a lonely foosball table.  Each time I’ve been here (including now) the bar is half full, which is perfect.  It’s a mellow experience.  Something you cherish after hanging out in Williamsburg too long.  Aiding the pleasantness, the jukebox (which is always free) plays good music from not too long ago, and the solo bartender consistently, but not overbearingly, asks how we are doing, how everything is, etc.  He says he’s sorry they opened up late today.  I tell him I hadn’t realized.

Black Sheep has the usual assortment of domestic, bottle and draught beer for around five bucks, with a few cheaper options (PBR can for three, Highlife for three-fifty) – and their extensive and enticing happy hour menu includes $4 pints and call drinks until 7pm, and $3 house drinks and $10 pitchers of a rotating beer until 8pm.  On Sundays the entire food menu is $5, and on Monday and Wednesday they have half-priced wine and $5 wings (usually $8). The food menu is the typical assortment of bar grub (nachos, wings, a bad house salad), with a focus on an array of specialty burgers for $8.50 a pop.  The burgers are good,  but a bit on the smallish side for the price, and they don’t include fries.

Black Sheep is a great bar is you’re trying to do some work (they have WiFi), and want to have a cheap drink and decent food during.  Check it out.
