FREE SHOW THURSDAY @ Secret Project Robot

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Sometimes I have trouble finding suitable events to write about, mostly because the lines I get from friends all tend to be so horribly pretentious that I would feel better selling you volcano insurance than peddling free invites to some “Night of Hip Modern Literature Wherein Gender Roles are Deconstructed Ever So Cleverly” run by some writer from Jezebel.

At those times I take a good look around for something unassuming and almost awkwardly awesome. If I’m lucky, Secret Project Robot has just what I’m looking for.

I fish for any excuse to visit this space. It’s got a sweet backyard with an excellent tiki bar, cheap beer, and your pick of silly haircuts and 90s attitudes. No Kitsch and No Cover. At times you might even be offered your fill of free sangria.

“Well gee, Bertha and I really need to get over there,” you find yourself thinking.

Well, here’s your excuse: a musical evening of alt rock from Stevie Weinstein-Foner, FREE ADVICE, and FUTURIST.

These bands are all connected by various yoga and spiritualist institutions so expect a lot of neo-flower children with open third eyes… i.e. dudes who look like Jesus and want to tell you about their Ayahuasca experience in woods of upstate New York.

The good news is that if you’re flying solo you probably won’t find a more open and welcoming crowd. These types tend to be some of the friendliest folk you’ll meet this year (caution: some of them might want to have sex with you).

BONUS: the event is called GOOD VIBES. And as you know, headlines don’t lie.

And I did mention that it’s ToTaLLy 100% FREE, right?

Good. See you there.

Going to a rich kid school when you aren't even given an allowance certainly trains you to live large on the cheap. Armed with such expertise, Jules travelled the globe, surviving off of 50 cent beers and 2 dollar meals everywhere from Buenos Aires to Mumbai. Three years ago he returned to the United States, living first in Baltimore while he settled a debt with the IRS, then in Brooklyn where he plays music and writes. He aspires to one day live in a van on N.15th and Kent.
