Return of the Intern

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

It’s the newbie, coming to you live from midterm central.  I never thought i would make it out alive, but here I am, making my dramatic entrance in a burst of flames.  Stuart asked me to pick my favorite cheap spot in the City. I literally have been thinking about this for a week [mind you, I’ve been hitting the bottle quite a bit each night after any small victory, so I’ve been consuming mass amounts of knowledge and booze] and have managed to pick not only my favorite, but one of Stuart’s as well.

Are you ready? Righteous drum roll, please…

Monica’s favorite place for when she’s hard up for cash is….
The Phone Booth!

First of all, Stuart was right. I’m kind of mad this is in the book, only because its probably my favorite bar in the entire city. It’s the kind of place that belongs in the Mission, and manages to be so hip that it isn’t…know what I mean?  Even though the bartenders can’t make a drink to save their lives, it’s all so cheap that you’ll drink whatever they give you. Vodka crans, aka my favorite standby, are only $3 and are enough to knock you out for days. There have been many a night where I have gone too far and paid the price, but when $20 can get you so smashed that you don’t remember undressing in the hall in front of your roommates when you get home, you start to not care. [sadly, its a true story.] other amazing aspects:

–Its super tiny, so it always feels like a gigantic party inside.
–The jukebox is exactly like my ipod and I end up dumping more money into it than i spend on drinks.
–The crowd is really diverse — I’ve seen gays, trannies, the stylish and the style-less and even a few old men. There is always a dog chillin out too.
–And they have pool table and free popcorn!

What more could you want? Possibly more cash, but down that PBR and that Jameson shot and let the good times roll. Long live the Phone Booth!

Feeling souper with Monica the Intern

Monica Miller - The Intern

Monica Miller - The Intern

Ms. Miller was born in San Diego, CA to one lesbian mother and one
righteous, cheap father. Currently, she is enrolled at San Francisco
State University for a B.A. in Journalism and the approximate
completion date is around 2015. She has worked for many papers in the
Bay Area, including the Oakland Tribune and the San Mateo Country
Times and is currently the city editor at one of the most
underappreciated publications in SF, the Golden Gate [X]press. Though
she may find bargains aplenty, it only stems from the necessity of
never landing an actual job and working for hacks [like Stuart.] With
intelligence, style, poise, bite, and honesty, she will rip your heart
out; but not before writing some awesome, poignant shit. This year,
she is looking forward to bigger and better things such as: trying to
get paid for a gig, actually finding a date that isn't a loser or
fucking crazy, not calling her parents when hungover and bringing you
the best of the 7x7 everyday of the week. [By the way, I wasn't
kidding about the date thing; if you love food, booze and shoegaze,
get at me.]
