Among the Castro bars, the Midnight Sun earns marks for consistency. Atmospherically, it can best be described as a giant television. There is never any natural daylight inside, as that there aren’t any windows, and it boasts no less than five television sets with either a constant rotation of gay comedy clips, bizarre music selections, or pervy old time cartoons.
Their built in crowd is mostly nine-to-fiver guys, thirty and above, and the sexual tension around five o’clock can border on frenzied. By the time ten rolls around most everyone has paired off (or grouped off for that matter) and stumbled elsewhere.
What the bar is most infamously known for is its heavy pour and ridiculously economic happy hours. Monday through Friday from 2-7, every liquor behind the bar is two for one, including top shelf. On Monday, however, they conjure Bacchus himself and have the two for one special from two in the afternoon ‘til two in the morning. If you manage to make it past a couple of rounds your liver may pop out of your back and run screaming down Eighteenth Street.
