Broke-Ass of the Week

Broke-Ass of the Week – Brock Keeling, Editor of SFist

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Every week we feature a different person from the community shedding a little light on their life of brokeitude.  Who knows, maybe you’ll learn something about the human spirit'probably not.

Wanna be a Broke-Ass of the Week?  Holler at us here and we’ll send you the questionnaire.

Brock and his friend Kate demonstrating my favorite new fetish: neck-humping.

As editor of SFist Brock Keeling has a lot of people reading his words everyday; luckily he’s pretty good at typing them out.  His witty and sarcastic tone make SFist incredibly readable and the sheer volume with which he publishes is astounding.  If I published as much as he did, my posts would devolve into a series of grunts, curses and blather…I’m half way there as it is.

Covering the strange, demented, and pleasant spectacle that is San Francisco, SFist is pretty much the most popular blog in this fair city.  As part of the Gothamist family, it relays all the details of city life from local politics to arts & culture, while doing it in ways newspapers still fail to do: through humor and tongue-in-cheek informality.  But despite the popularity of SFist, Brock is still the editor of a website, meaning he certainly qualifies as a Broke-Ass.  Let’s see what kind of insights he can give us into his personal brand of brokeitude.

Name: Brock Keeling

Age: 35

Occupation: Editor / writer

What neighborhood do you live in?: The crime-heavy, newly rechristened LoRi neighborhood (Lower Outer Rincon Hill), right under the overpass.

Best money saving tip: Cut up your credit cards and ATM/debit cards.

What do you refuse to spend money on?: My savings accounts

Most expensive thing you’ve ever bought: Computer, coat

How’d that feel?: (Computer) painfully necessary; (coat) like I was touched by the hand of God.

Favorite cheap eat: Banh Mi sandwiches. No, just kidding. Probably those chicken and cheese fried roll thingys at 7-11.

Best deal you’ve ever gotten: Any happy hour that lasts until 10 p.m.

Favorite free thing to do: Walk around downtown area on weekends

If you woke up a millionaire, what’s the first thing you’d buy?: A suite at the Four Seasons where I would stay until my compound was complete.

Despite not having money, do you still love your life?: I like it.

Do you own my book?: Alas, I watch TV.

Best hangover cure: Water, sleep, Campbell’s Tomato Juice

Are you a hipster?: I am over 30, so that would be impossible.
